This 25 year old rapper hails from Queens (via Trinidad), and has taken the game by storm since her Young Money debut! Without an album you ask?? Simply, I reply “Yes “. Let’s look at some of the factors that make this possible.

First, we examine her talent. Hate it or love it, you can’t deny the truth….most of us love it! She’s clever and she’s funny; bars laced with punchlines that can rival that of the heavyweights…male or female. In short, she’s got skillz!

The second factor is her sex appeal. Despite the rumors of her getting a nose job and butt implants, she still has that “around the way girl” appeal and, to most urban guys – including myself – she is definitely a dime…hands down. I think that’s something we can all probably agree on…despite her crazy hair and facial expressions!

Then there is the fact that she’s been signed to arguably the hottest label right now – Young Money – by arguably the hottest rapper on the streets (and behind bars) Young Money’s own “LiL Wayne”. Her and label mate Drake are among their all star team and they’re all doing big things….collectively and solo.

Last but not least, she simply has no rival for the crown; she is the hottest rap chic in the game right now. I mean really, is there anyone else ?? I’ll wait while you think about that!

She has cameos with Hip Hop and R&B’s A-list; from Usher, Fabolous, Drake, and Mariah Carey, to Gyptian and Gucci Mane…and the list goes on and on. She also seems to handle herself pretty well lyrically, as we saw on the BET cipher a few months ago. Her word play and facial expressions are definitely unique, as well as her Barbie’s world persona, which her fans are fully sold on, #teamminaj …yes I’m a fan too….so what!

So, enough stroking her ego, let’s get down to the nitty gritty. First off , “Diddy” very smart media mogul, Yes…. but Manager?? Hmmm…not sure! Maybe we should ask Faith, Lil Kim and Carl Thomas that question. Matter fact, I’m sure a few more will attest. Secondly, the jury is still out on whether she is gay, bi-sexual or as usher put it “a little freak”? She seems to like the ladies more than the fellas though. Her trademark signature on boobies all around the world backs up this point. Not to mention in one of her rhymes she says “I’m plotting on how I can take Cassie away from Diddy” really Nicki?? What about the guys? Well, allegedly she has been dating her hype man SB for years now, but this is nothing she will confirm or deny.

So, you ask can she get played out before she evens drops an album?? Possibly, but without any competition that would and will be very hard. The hate will definitely poor in but, just know one thing. Ms. Nicki Minaj has yet to unlock her full potential. I’m sure the movies, commercials, and other endorsements are well on the way for this female rap phenom. All this, and Wayne isn’t even home yet…..WOW! So, as we continue to scrutinize and support her success as she moves to the top…. I leave you with this “ITS BARBIE B@@@@ES”!

by @jazzife – Jazmyn Ífé Jefferson

If you think you’re hearing double, you might be listening to the twin duo Natalie and Nicole Albino, the R&B group known as Nina Sky (“Nina” being a shortened combined version of their first names and “Sky” representing their aspirations).

Though their 2004 release “Move Ya Body” climbed to #17 in the Billboard charts, the duo promptly slid back into obscurity which is largely where they’re remained ever since. They created their “Starting Today” album in July 2007 but the release was put off and they left their label (Universal) later that year and signed on instead with Polo Grounds. The album trickle-released after that, all to a fairly lukewarm response. The title track was released via iTunes the following year, another song released as a follow-up, and another released in July 2010…and this after a difficult battle between the singers and the label. The singers claimed that the label had not been showing support for their music and wished to be released from their contract. In March of 2010, they aired this dispute on their Twitter page, asking fans to contact the label’s president—going so far as to give out his phone number—in an effort to get their album released. A firm release date has still not been announced.

But Nina Sky’s perpetual determination has kept a constant (albeit mostly unnoticed) amount of activity to their careers: they’ve performed live (included a 21-city tour), have been guest singers on the occasional track (including the recent “Jersey Shore” soundtrack), record occasional videos, and keep activity going on their Facebook and Twitter pages. An “A” for effort at keeping their career afloat but without label and fan support, it’s unlikely to translate into a career that pays the bills.

Their current effort is a move that has been notoriously unsuccessful for other artists that have tried the same tact, and may be a last-ditch effort to bypass the label and reach the fans: they released a free eight song digital album on their website, ninasky.bandcamp.com. (It can be streamed online or downloaded as MP3s or FLAC.)

The songs are a respectable effort but like Nina Sky’s career has been so far, they’re just not that memorable. It doesn’t seem likely one can expect a repeat of Move Ya Body’s success and this album may just be the last we hear from the two of them. Light pop-ish electronica with an R&B influence, the lyrics are as monotonous, repetitive, and uninteresting as one typically expects from electronica tracks. Overall, with few high points, the album sounds like “filler” tracks at an off-night in a dance club, certainly nothing that sends people running out to the dance floor. “Only You”, despite its music box-like beginning, evolves into an acceptably solid song. “Never Look Back” contains some interesting beats and singing but can barely be defined as a song, clocking in at under a minute and lacking a chorus. “Love Song”, a remake of the Cure song by the same name, is fun but neither original nor memorable. All in all, Nina Sky’s “The Other Side” is an album that’s worth the price: free.

By Erica L. Porter

Black hair is the most unique type of hair in existence. It is naturally course in texture, but as our DNA has encountered a major metamorphosis over the centuries, so too has our hair. Many don’t understand it and shudder at how complicated our tresses can be. Others embrace it and marvel at its flexibility. Beauticians have spent decades attempting to train the Black woman’s hair. They have relaxed; blow dried and straightened it in order to tame it. Organic products, home remedies, as well as, the best man made manufactured hair products have been used on our hair; yet it still has a mind of its own. Some women swear by weaves, others say natural is the best. So what can be done to help us? How can Black women walk the street without constantly being ridiculed by society?

I was never into sitting in the salon and paying an outrageous price to get my hair styled and cut. Years ago, Black beauticians would charge up to sixty-five dollars for a relaxer and style…a lot of money back then (and still a little pricey today). Then some were never on time for appointments and even worse, the products used were so heavy and harsh that I would have to wash it out after just getting it done! In time, I just began to feel that my time – and money – were being wasted and, for years to follow, just wore hats and braids so I would not have to deal with my hair. At a point, ponytails became my thing, but eventually my hair began to fall out right at the crown of the ponytail! Ughh! I was so frustrated and I didn’t know where to turn. On one hand, I wasn’t motivated because I work in the construction field and I am not required to be “done up” at all times. On the other hand, as a woman I wanted to feel comfortable walking out the door. So decisions had to be made!

When I moved to Queens, NY a close friend introduced me to what she referred to as “The Dominican” hair salon. Now, when I was in high school my friends always came to school with what was called a “Doobie”; this is when the hair is wrapped in a circle and hair pins are used to hold the style together. I always thought my friends looked so silly, but when they combed their hair out it looked marvelous. When I asked about it, I was always told “It’s an uptown thang”. Since I was from Brooklyn, I never inquired any further. But with my new introduction to this uptown treasure, I got my answer! I immediately began researching and asking questions…receiving so much positive feedback that I decided I had to give them a shot.

Admittedly, I was so nervous when I first walked in because you don’t know which beautician to go to. “Mami you want a wash and set?” shouted Jacqueline my new hairstylist. She immediately took me to the sink and began giving me the best hair wash I had ever experienced (next to my own). The salon was packed and Spanish music was blasting from the stereo. The salon was stuffy and everyone was loud! I never knew Dominican hairstylists were able to do such a fantastic job on our hair. But I was totally incorrect in all of my assumptions because Jacqueline pulled it off! This new breed of beautician has been able to work wonders on my hair. This is where the magic began!

The skill Dominican hairstylists have mastered is blow drying. The hair is roller set and blown straight from the roots downward with a wig/wire brush. This process leaves a wonderful feel to your hair. Although the hair dryers can damage the hair and scalp; deep treatments and scalp treatments/ointments are offered to combat this. They use very light hair products and don’t mind using the customer’s personal hair products. My scalp gets massaged often while being washed not just “scratched”. The most important thing is there is no curling iron used on the hair unless requested. This process is also very inexpensive, costing me only twenty dollars. What I would spend on one hairstyle from a Black owned salon allows me to go to the Dominicans several times per month.

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to disrespect my Black beauticians; and there are still times when Black hair needs Black hands. It’s just in most cases there is a significant difference in the type of services provided. The Dominican hair salons get you in and out. I’m always done in an hour and a half without fail. The downside to the Dominican hair salons is they do not specialize in Black hair styles like ponytails, flat twists (with synthetic hair), deep waves or asymmetrical cuts. Also relaxers aren’t left in long enough for Black Hair. You Urban Beauties know how we like our “edges” straight! For the latter hairstyles I would stick with Black beauticians because I know those styles would come out the best.

From course to wavy and from short to long, hair is a woman’s strength and character. The media has played a significant role in disrespecting a Black woman’s beauty specifically by mocking our hair. It took many of us a long time to understand how beautiful Black hair is. Various alternatives are available for us to choose from but I like to keep it simple and have my hair flowin’ in the wind. Becoming a customer at a Dominican hair salon was one of the best hair decisions I had made in my life. Dominican hair salons are a godsend for Black hair.

We all have seen those romanticized movies of getting married and living “Happily Ever After”. Unfortunately, those images have, and continue to, lead some of us to get married for the wrong (or at least misguided) reasons. Even after the wedding day has passed, most do not have a realistic vision of what the institution of marriage truly entails.

The wedding day is the Day of Coronation for the woman, who has likely dreamt about this day as far as she can remember. The wedding day represents a important milestone in her life. It signifies not only that she is beloved by many, but especially loved by one person; It is that announcement to the world that someone is committed to share their life with her. However, some women pursue this quest for ulterior motives, independent of the true love that is to be shared. We all know of someone that seemed so anxious to tell everyone that they were married first amongst their friends, as if it was a footrace to the altar. Even if the relationship was stained with tales of deceit, abuse and betrayal, some women will still stroll down the aisle just to make that claim. Though, you can rest assured, there will surely be some amongst the group who will offer their “opinion” on the ill fate of that union, but still, they proceed without caution.

Some women are aware of their mates’ shortcomings, but will still want to marry them in the hopes that their wandering eye and frisky hands will now be tempered by the bonds of matrimony. Unfortunately, what always comes as a surprise to the spurned spouse is that marriage does not a serve as a restriction to the philanderer’s habits. If the mate was one with a jealous nature, marriage will only serve to escalate, not stabilize, that insecurity. If the mate was one who sought to resolve their mood swings in a physical manner, marriage will only serve to allow that person to believe that their actions are accepted behavior by the woman. At some point during this cycle of abuse and/or neglect, the wife will realize that the reality of marriage has fallen far short of their dream.

In every marriage, there will be the experience of both peaks and valleys. However, it is during the trips to the valleys that some will choose not to react…in their attempt, of course, to preserve the marriage. We are led to believe that marriages, especially ours, must and will stand the test of time. Even despite the fact that many of us have come from single parent homes, or have seen our parents separate and/or divorce, we still hold on to the idea that our relationship will be a success story. But for it to truly be a success story, there must be a commanding level of both trust and respect between the couple. That’s the part we overlook. You cannot allow yourself to be emotionally abused, just to preserve the relationship, especially if children are part of the equation. If this abuse is allowed, the feeling of self-worth will be lost and that devalued feeling, although not spoken, can be transferred to the children as well. The children will absorb and exhibit the same conduct in their relationships when they come of age.

Marriage has proven to be a great institution, but must be entered into for the right reasons. There must be a sincere understanding that the wedding day is a continuation of the true feeling of love that is present, not a belief that love will be found on that day going forward. When those vows are spoken, they must be spoken to the right person, at the right time, with the right feelings within your heart. This is not a guarantee that your marriage will not fail, but you will give yourself a better chance of having it succeed.

Love: What does it mean to you?

I use to be deeply in love with someone once; so in love, I would have given my last breathe if it meant that they would live. As I say it, I’m actually not quite sure if “use to” is the best choice of words though…but “in love” can’t be right either; it feels more like “in hate”…a deep sense of hatred that is buried way down in the pits of my soul. But a good friend once told me that you have to love someone in order to hate them; so, maybe hatred is befitting. All I know for sure is that it hurts to even acknowledge that this person still occupies space somewhere in the corner of my mind. I wish I could be free of the knowledge of their mere existence…but then again, I don’t want to forget the journey – or the wisdom I gained along the way!

For the sake of my relationship I stepped outside of my comfort zone, and outside of myself, in order to make someone else happy. I realized that I made someone my whole world when in fact I was just made to become a small part of theirs. My love was limitless, whereas theirs had a limit. I gave all that I had to give…every fiber of my being and more, yet that was never enough. Even when the relationship was over and this person I would have dies for walked past me as if I was a complete stranger…without even so much as a hello…I still held onto a small glimmer of hope in my heart that they would come back; I thought that my love alone would be enough for us to survive. Unfortunately, I was sadly mistaken. It took me sometime, but I finally realized that my love could not save the relationship. I wanted it so badly but in that moment love ceased to exist in my heart.

This was my rock bottom; I gave up on love. A mess, internally and externally, it wasn’t hard to tell that – at that point – I just didn’t care about anything at all. And I don’t even think that they were aware of the damage that they caused to my emotional well being (or perhaps didn’t care). Still, I let it consume me and I was just going through life letting it pass me by. That is until one day when I finally realized that I had to take my life back; I had to pick up the pieces and remind myself that love was not the enemy at all…everybody just isn’t worthy of the love that one has to give. I had to stop wallowing in self pity and let my heart heal…and use my previous relationship as a blueprint to what I will and will not tolerate; what I do and do not want in a mate. I am now able to open my heart and mind to love, loving, and being in love.

Loving someone and being in love is one of the best and worst feelings that one would ever be so lucky to experience in life. To truly understand and/or figure out what love is, and what love is not, I was advised to dig deep into the core of who I am and be truthful with myself. One can easily recite a love poem, song, or a line from a movie, but wouldn’t that in essence just be a regurgitation of someone else’s ideology of what love is…or a culmination of other peoples thoughts and feelings? So I ask myself what is love really…what does it mean to me?

Love is supposed to be patient and kind; it is not envious, it does not boast, it is not jealous nor is it proud. This, according to the bible’s 1st book of Corinthians, 13th chapter 4th verse; the love book as my grandmother so eloquently referred to it. When I think of love all of the aforementioned notions do come to mind, as well as others. Love is so strong…such a magnetic force that can pull and bind two souls together for a lifetime. Love is selfless…when you give yourself to someone you give all that you have to that person and to the relationship. There are going to be moments when an image of the person that you love will come to mind and take you to heights of euphoria; you’ll be yearning just to be in their presence. But there also can and may be moments when the sheer thought of them will take you to a place that one wished they never knew existed. Love pushes boundaries and evokes all emotions that are humanly possible within a person. When love is part of the equation, other less beautiful emotions can sometimes rear their ugly heads; The passion you enjoy can lead to the rage that’s unearthed by hurt…serenity replaced by sadness.

Love to me is something that can be beautiful, pure, genuine and strong; when two souls come together as one it’s like the birth of a new life. True lovers form a bond; a connection to the outside eye would look like just any ordinary relationship, but in fact there is nothing ordinary about it. People search a lifetime to find a love of their own, and when you find your other half that’s something to hold on tight to. Loving someone means you have to compromise, listen, know when to apologize, be strong when your mate is weak, as well as be their biggest supporter. Love is strength; when one has love, they feel empowered through the support of their partner.

With the good feelings also come the bad though. Love is going to cause you pain- it’s a given, but there are some pains that love should never cause you to feel. The pain of love can cut deep, deeper than any pain imaginable; it can leave scars that may never heal. Imagine making someone your world, just to realize that what you believed to be real and genuine was a farce…and all sense of your reality was a lie. You may start to blame yourself even…“what’s wrong with me?” you might wonder. Love should not make you feel less than, or cause you to loathe who you are, for the sake of the one that you love.

When on the battlefields of love you shouldn’t have visible war wounds and your spirit should not be broken down for the world to see; no bruising, broken bones, nor black and blues. That is not what love is. And though sometimes in relationships we excuse away hits, yells, etc. as something being done out of some twisted display of love, that is not – nor will never be – love. If someone truly loves you, they will not treat you as anything less than an equal; a counterpart.

When you are genuinely in love with a person, you will love them for who they are – not for whom you want them to be; You cannot say that you love someone, but you would love them just a little bit more if they changed things about themselves. When you love someone you take them as they are – the good, the bad, and the ugly. How can you truly say you love someone if you’re trying to change who they are? That’s not the person whom you really love; in actuality you would love a person whom you’re trying to create.

People go running, skipping, and screaming from the rooftops how they are so in love but, are they just saying it or are they living it? I can say I love someone but if, as soon as a problem arises, I run for the hills…then I was not in love in the first place. Maybe it was lust. When you love someone you don’t leave – you stick it out and you support your mate. Love is about compromise, trusting, and having faith. You commit yourself not wanting or expecting anything in return except to love and be loved. And if there is no faith then there is no love; faith and trust are the foundation upon which love is built. With love there are no guarantees you just have to hope, pray, and wish that your love will withstand the test of time.

Months later another friend told me about it and now I’m ready to get there. This function has been the talk of the town for quite sometime! Come out and meet an eclectic group of artists, poets, musicians, writers and hop hop-ologists on the first Saturday of every month. This event is from 5PM until 11PM. We have to begin to support our local businesses to keep them afloat so they can support their families. With the economy the way it is parents and caregivers have to find more economical ways to have fun! Going to Jamaica or the Bahamas is nice but what will the family do before hand and afterwards. Sorry if I seem a little biased UBM readers, but I am a native New Yorker and I love how diverse New York has become. Every state has fun-filled things for the family to partake in. You should visit your state government websites for free events and become a member to receive notifications. There are many free and low cost events being held all year-round especially in the Summer. To get the most for your buck just do a little footwork, finger work and use your resources. Remember keep it Urban.
